The Maldives is a tropical nation in the Indian ocean southwest of India and Sri Lanka. It covers an area of 90,000 sq.km and only 10% of it is the land area. There are 1196 islands which are grouped into 26 atolls. All these atolls are surrounded with ring-shaped live coral reefs to protect the islands against waves and rough sea.

Since Maldives is near the Equator, there is only 2 seasons throughout the year which lasts for 6 months each. The dry season, Northeast monsoon, from November to April and wet season, Southwest monsoon, from May to October. The average temperature is maximum 32 degrees celcius and minimum 25 degrees celcius. Average rainfall is about 1900 mm per year.
